After a couple of teasers reminding us that hell hath no fury such as a Handmaid, Hulu has finally given us the goods on The Handmaid’s Tale season 2—that is, a new trailer showing just how much the second season diverges from Margaret Atwood’s novel.
In fact, it doesn’t diverge so much as pull a Game of Thrones and explore entirely new territory: what happens after (spoiler) Offred/June is carried away by the Eyes at the end of season 1. Readers of the book could only guess as to what the fallout was, for the Commander’s household and for Gilead as a whole. Now, we see: Fred and Serena Joy terrified they’ll be accused of being part of the resistance; Luke and Moira participating in protests and riots across the border in Canada; Aunt Lydia presiding over a mass hanging of Handmaids (!) in a football field; and Emily and other former Handmaids laboring away in that ominous land we never see in the book, the irradiated Colonies.
